For those unfamiliar with the term and tradition, a trunk party is a celebration where generous donors contribute items youth heading to college need for their dorm room or class materials — and on August 3, UCAN hosted its first-ever trunk party.
Sixty youth from the community and various UCAN programming joined family, friends and staff in the Fred Smith Gymnasium in our Diermeier Therapeutic Youth Home to celebrate heading to college. For many of the youth, they are the first in their family.
Each youth and their school was announced and celebrated before receiving their “trunks,” including school items such as book bags and notebooks, and daily living items like pillows, comforters, sheets, hygiene products, shower shoes and caddies, hampers and nonperishable foods.
Donations came from Hilton Hotel, Patterson Dental Services, Alderman Michael Scott’s office, and UCAN staff and families.
