Kendell’s Story: Evolving Through 360 Community

January 27, 2016 Posted by UCANfuzzymath

Fourteen-year-old Kendell came to UCAN approximately one year ago through a referral from his school to UCAN’s 360 Community program. His mentor recognized his potential after an initial meeting with Kendell and his family.

Through his participation in 360, Kendell has been able to participate in exposure outings which have included trips to local sporting events and restaurants. As part of the youth development portion of the 360 program, youth are mentored and empowered to enhance their strengths. This is done through encouraging youth participants to engage in activities that will provide them with opportunities to develop new skills. Kendell has worked most diligently to develop his communication skills. In November he participated in UCAN’s Youth Peace Summit where he and other youth discussed the different issues that are present in their neighborhoods and how they can make positive changes in their communities. This event gave him a chance to speak with other youth whom with he would not normally interact.

When asked how the program has helped Kendell he stated, “I don’t interact with the same people I used to hang with.” He explained that he decided to steer away from some of his old friends because he was putting himself into negative situations. Kendell now spends his free time with family members and his mentor; and is no longer getting into fights in school and on the streets. He noted that he has learned how to successfully avoid confrontations as well.

Kendell’s mentor has observed his growth by stating, “Kendell has become more focused on his education. He understands its importance and value now.” He elaborated by describing how Kendell’s football coach has also been impressed with his growth outside of the football field.

Kendell, an avid football player desires to play professional football or become a football coach in the future. Kendell recently joined UCAN’s Diermeier Future Leaders Now (DFLN) program which is a 35 hour leadership development program. Through the encouragement and support from his mentor and family, Kendell is now on the right path to a positive and successful future.
