About UCAN & YLA

Mission

UCAN strengthens communities by supporting youth and families, offering a continuum of services for over 150 years.

UCAN’s expertise spans youth in care, youth development, mental health, therapeutic schools, workforce development, and violence prevention and intervention.

Vision

UCAN leads with transformational interventions so that families and communities can be safe and prosper. UCAN is relentless.

UCAN Leadership Awards

The UCAN Leadership Awards, held annually in June, is not just an event. It's a testament to our collective efforts and the impact we've  made. Formerly known as the Youth Leadership Awards, this premier fundraising event celebrates the academic and personal achievements of determined individuals. Each year, seven outstanding youth are  honored and awarded scholarships to support their pursuit  of higher education. Your support for this uplifting event is what makes these achievements possible.

This year, as we celebrate 26 years of growth, we are proud to expand the focus to reflect the full scope of our work—not only uplifting youth  but also recognizing the resilience  and success of the adults we serve. By showcasing more of our programs and impact, we continue our commitment to empower individuals across Chicago. Established 156 years ago as a orphanage during the Civil War, UCAN has evolved into  one of Chicago’s most innovative social service agencies.

UCAN serves over 9,100 youth and families annually, helping them reach their full potential through holistic support. Our integrated  programs break cycles of violence and abuse while fostering hope. From residential care and counseling to violence intervention and  prevention, workforce development, and youth leadership, we empower young people  and communities to build brighter futures.
